Paws Up Thanksgiving: Helping Animal Shelters

Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude and giving back. This year, why not show your appreciation for animals by supporting your local animal shelter? Here are a few project ideas to help you make a difference:

  1. Donate Supplies
  • Essential Items: Food, water bowls, litter boxes, and cleaning supplies are always in need.
  • Warmth and Comfort: Blankets, towels, and cozy beds can provide comfort to shelter animals.
  • Enrichment Toys: Puzzle feeders, chew toys, and scratching posts can keep animals mentally and physically stimulated.

  1. Host a Fun Fundraiser
  • Online Auction: Sell donated items or services to raise money for the shelter.
  • Virtual Pet Parade: Encourage people to share photos of their pets on social media and donate to the shelter.
  • Matching Gift Challenge: Partner with a local business to match donations made during a specific timeframe.
  • Fundraising: Organize a bake sale, car wash, or other fundraising event to benefit the shelter.

  1. Promote Senior and Long-Term Pets
  • Share Adoptable Pets: November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month and a pawsome time to network these loving pets. Go to your local shelter/rescue’s website and find a senior or long-term pet waiting for their forever home. Copy their picture, bio and link and share on your social media page.  Have kids or your students make a poster and put it on your social media. Be sure to tag the shelter/rescue!

  1. Create DIY Enrichment Toys
  • Cardboard Creations: Make puzzle feeders or scratching posts from cardboard boxes.
  • Fabric No-Sew Fun: Sew toys or blankets from old clothes or fabric scraps.
  • Toys: Make rope toys, snuffle mats or dog crinkle socks.

Why not Go For It, have fun and help make a real difference in the lives of shelter animals. Remember, every little bit helps!
