July 15th marks National Pet Fire Safety Day, a critical reminder that while we plan for the safety of our human family members during a fire, our beloved pets often get overlooked. A house fire is a terrifying thought, but having a clear plan in place can make all the difference. And yes, that plan absolutely needs to include your four-legged, feathered, or scaled companions!
Why Pets Need a Special Plan
Pets react differently than humans in a fire. They can become disoriented, hide, or instinctively try to escape through unsafe routes. They can’t dial 911, and they can’t tell firefighters where they are. That’s why YOU are their best chance for survival.
Essential Steps for Pet Fire Safety
Here’s how you can make sure your pets are an integral part of your home fire escape plan:
- Include Pets in Your Family Fire Drill: Practice your escape routes with your pets. Know where they tend to hide when scared or stressed. If they typically hide under a bed or in a closet, you need to account for that in your escape time.
- Designate a Pet Caregiver for Evacuation: In your family’s escape plan, assign one person the responsibility of gathering the pets. This prevents multiple people from trying to find them, saving precious seconds. If you have multiple pets, make sure this person knows where each one usually is.
- Keep Leashes and Carriers Accessible: Store leashes, collars, and pet carriers near exits or in easily accessible spots. In an emergency, fumbling for these items wastes critical time. For cats and smaller animals, carriers are essential for safe transport.
- Install Pet Alert Window Clings: These decals on your windows or front door let firefighters know that there are pets inside your home. Make sure to update the number of pets on the cling if it changes. You can often get these free from local fire departments or pet supply stores.
- Secure Pet-Proofed Areas at Night/When Away: If your pets are crated or kept in a specific room at night or when you’re out, ensure those areas are safe and accessible for quick retrieval. Consider having fire alarms near pet sleeping areas.

- Open Flames: Never leave candles, fireplaces, or stovetops unattended, especially with curious pets around.

- Glass Water Bowls on Decks: On sunny days, a glass bowl filled with water can act like a magnifying glass and ignite wooden decks. Use metal or ceramic bowls outdoors.
- Know Your Neighbors: If you’re not home during a fire, having a trusted neighbor who knows you have pets and where they might be can be a lifesaver. Give them a spare key and make sure they know your pets’ names and general habits.
- Microchip and Current ID Tags: In the chaos of an evacuation, pets can become separated. Ensure your pets are microchipped and that their ID tags are current with your phone number and address. This significantly increases the chances of reunification.
