A group of middle school students teamed up to educate a nearby 1st grade class about cat overpopulation and the importance of spay and neutering. As this was all new to the 1st graders, the older students first read the class a picture book called, “It’s Raining Cats–And Cats” by Jeanne Prevost. The second part of the lesson was having the 1st graders place felt cats on large board showing that from one unspayed female, many cats can be born. The middle schoolers created all of the felt cats and the interactive felt board. 1st graders learned key vocabulary like spay, neuter and overpopulation.
Cat Overpopulation 411
Biggest Takeaway:
- This was an amazing, fun and very worthwhile project! It was very inspiring to have the 1st graders see and understand why cat overpopulation is important and to understand how spaying and neutering can help cats.
Biggest Challenge
- Coordinating the visit to the 1st grade class was a challenge even know the school was nearby. The other challenge was making all of the felt cats although it was fun!
Project Impact:
- We didn’t directly benefit a shelter/rescue, but we educated young kids so that they know about cat overpopulation and the importance of spay and neuter.
